Assault and Battery.. what do I do if I was a victim?

I was badly beaten by my boyfriend (now ex) last week. (The Dr's thought he cracked my skull and broke my back, I'm still suffering from a concussion) I'm afraid to press charges because we work in the same area and I know he'll seek retaliation. But from what I hear, he's bragging about beating me and lying, saying he did it because I stole money from him. I wasn't seeking retribution until the slander hit my ears. Is there a way I can get an order of protection / restraining order for my work and home without him being arrested? Plus I have medical bills from the ER visits (his name is on the med reports as assaillant), I want him to pay these also. And a formal apology for what he did and further slandering my name. What do I do?
