Can you block infect (poison counters) in Magic: The Gathering?

Yes you can, but if you do it deals damage in -1/-1 counters. Let's say a 1/1 with infect is attacking and you block with a 2/2. The 1/1 will die but the 2/2 will thenbecome a 1/1 due to the -1/-1 damage.
