Magic The Gathering, MTG?

I need help with the actuality of obtaining a deck. I know how to play, and I understand the guidelines of following a particular color/theme. However, what I need to know is: if I should purchase several starter decks or invest money buying hundreds of individual card packs? I am trying to gather powerful but unique sorcery, enchantments, and instants.My creatures are sufficient.
